    Verbage

We the people of the City of Pittsburgh are fundamentally dissatisfied with the performance of Mayor Thomas Murphy. He is supposed to carry out the will of the citizens of the City of Pittsburgh, yet the will of the people is blatantly disregarded. We have a RAD tax, not one but two new stadiums and a Convention Center all of which the people overwhelmingly said that they did not want. He has mismanaged Pittsburgh into a financial disaster, and now wants to cut some of the most vital Public Safety services to clear the way for him to manipulate the State Legislature into bailing Pittsburgh out. This gamble is not acceptable and places the welfare of every citizen at risk. Our families and children must be protected. The City of Pittsburgh has enjoyed a place in the top ten safest cities in America for years now, and that has everything to do with our Public Safety. With a substantial smaller Police Dept., crime will undoubtedly go up, more citizens will move out, and the plight will only get worse. THIS IS NOT ACCEPTABLE....

Therefore, with this petition we the citizens of the City of Pittsburgh are requesting that official Impeachment proceedings be started to remove from office Mayor Tom Muphy, and that an injunction be placed to stop the butchering of our Police, EMT, and Crossing Guard units.

Prepared by the concerned citizens of Lawrenceville and the Lawrenceville Blockwatch.

Jim Genco, 412-977-5893, gave me the blank copy of the petition and it seems that he is the instigator of this petition.

    Completed Petitions

Mail the petitions to Jim Genco, 3441 Denny Street, Pittsburgh, PA 15201. Generally, petitions for candidates and referendums need to be notorized. However, in this case only 20 signatures are necessary to start the impeachment process. So, the work here is made more significant by its volume.

    More thoughts

Mayor Tom Murphy is in his third term and there are no term limits for this office. He can run and run and run again. Perhaps the only way to have him leave office is to impeach him.

More people left Pittsburgh since Tom Murphy has been the Mayor of Pittsburgh than voted for him to continue as mayor. Many have voted with their feet. More are going to vote with their feet in the near term future. The only people left in town might be employees. Impeachment sounds like a good option for a person who has no term limits and has been in office for the past decade and set up this financial mess.

The petition movement for impeachment sends a clear message to Tom Murphy: "resign!" Going out of the way to pass the petition makes it known that this administration should depart.

Those on city council should stand up and say that they would consider casing their vote onto the side of impeachment should they have the opportunity. City council members act as the jury to the impeachement process. Council members have a vested interest in righting the course for this city and need to be more proactive in their leadership.

The removal of Mayor Murphy isn't going to be a cure to the city's ills, but it is a necessary first step. This is not like a wart on the nose of a terminal cancer patient. Rather the Mayor and city relationships is more like gangrene in the foot to the entire body.

In Europe, the tradition holds that leadership resignation occurs when the advancement of an agenda stalls. Mayor Murphy is politically bankrupt and must step aside for the good of the city. Mayor Murphy does not hold regular press conferences. Mayor Murphy does not attend citizen meetings in the neighborhoods. Outrage blows his way from various individuals in our streets, so he doesn't surface.

Those who earn a living and are raising kids, teaching cooperation and competition, don't follow the follies on Grant Street. But now they notice the closed swim pools and Rec Centers. The giants, the parents, the public has noticed and they are on the edge and with outrage. These people need to put their mass of power into action to remove the mayor.

Should the mayor resign or else be impeached, the City Council President would assume the role for a short period. The council president has to win his election on November 4, 2003. He has challengers. And, at the next election, a new Mayor's election would occur.
